The aim is to examine how the significance of children’s age and maturity is described in knowledge support for child protection workers in Sweden. The analysis is based on three state governed knowledge supports. Critical discourse analysis is used as method as well as theoretical framework. The theoretical framework also includes notions regarding age. The result show that children’s maturity generally relates to chronological age and is measured against adult abilities. Furthermore, children are categorized as “typical” and “non-typical” where the latter is described as those who do not follow an expected chronological development and age-related norms. In summary, the analysed knowledge support does not provide distinctive support in assessments of age and maturity but rather manifests the complexity of such assessments. (Less)
