- Abstract
- Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and an increasing demand for distributed work, virtual teams emerge in workplaces at an increased rate. A common factor of performance in virtual teams are the levels of trust, which is tightly interlinked with both communication and leadership. Researchers are looking for new ways of looking at virtual leadership, and some have begun looking at virtual worlds for inspiration. This study gives some perspective on leaders in virtual worlds, and how they see and work with trust in virtual teams. Through interviews with several guild leaders in World of Warcraft and a thorough review of literature around critical success factors of trust in virtual teams, the study presents how guild leaders work to build trust in... This study gives some perspective on leaders in virtual worlds, and how they see and work with trust in virtual teams. Through interviews with several guild leaders in World of Warcraft and a thorough review of literature around critical success factors of trust in virtual teams, the study presents how guild leaders work to build trust in virtual teams. The result of the study shows among other things, that media richness is not as important to the guild leader as previous research suggests. And as performance is easier to track through systems, the need for feedback is reduced, but shines light on the need for presence and creating a sense of digital togetherness, despite geographical dislocation.
