- Abstract
- Through ten semi-structured interviews, with people identified as women and air pressure stimulator users, this study examines lived experiences of using air pressure stimulators. The stimulators serve as a prism to explore the gendered relationship between human, technology and sexual pleasure. Judith Butler’s (2007) heterosexual matrix, Gayle Rubin’s (1998 [1984]) sex hierarchy and Donna Haraway’s (2008) cyborg form the theoretical framework of the study. The users of the stimulators navigate within a heterosexual order that believes that women's sexual autonomy poses a threat to dominant gender and sexuality norms. Women's desires are here expected to be directed unilaterally at a man, not a technology. However, gender and sexuality... (More)

However, gender and sexuality norms should not be understood as static, but rather as fluctuating. In this fluctuation, there is room for negotiation. Thus, the view of masturbation and stimulators change in relation to time, space and context. This study also highlights how the stimulator users destabilize the dichotomic order that advocates the separation of male/female, human/technology, active/passive. While the interviewees were concerned that the stimulators would alienate them from a ”natural” sexuality, the use of them brought an elevated sexual agency and new sexual experiences. (Less)
