Polycykliska aromatiska kolväten vid vägtekniska undersökningar

- Abstract (Swedish)

(Less) - Abstract
- An investigation regarding PAH detection in road pavements has been put
together as an assignment from Trafikverket. The purpose of this investigation
is to put forward suggestions about how they should shape their upcoming
research program.
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, PAH, is an organic chemical compound
which is found in road tar. Road tar was used as a bonding agent in asphalt
pavements in Sweden for almost 50 years, until 1973. Several PAHs have
shown to be carcinogenic which has resulted in several restrictions and
guidelines being set forth on how tar asphalt should be handled. There is as of
today no obvious method for PAH detection in road constructions, which have
led to increased uncertainty for PAH analysis.

In order to develop a greater understanding of the subject, both a literature
study and interviews with knowledgeable people in the industry has been
conducted. Which resulted in propositions on improvements for Trafikverkets
survey strategy and laboratory analysis. Whether recycling is something that
ought to be recommended for tarry asphalt in this survey strategy have also
been investigated. The interviews have been conducted with people working
in different phases of the PAH detection. This involves people associated with
planning, sampling, sample preparation and the chemical analysis.
The preparatory work is essential for a well-executed sampling. A lot of
emphasis should be placed on the historical data to detect if there is likely to
contain dangerous levels of PAH, and where in the road construction the
health-hazardous PAH groups may be. A combination of conducting a
comprehensive PAH test in the early stages of the planning process and with a
more complementary sampling for PAH at a later stage is considered the
optimal method for PAH detections. Methods for the management of drill
cores and how laboratory analysis should be implemented ought to be
standardised in order to reduce the risk of the results being differentiated
depending on who is executing the work. A well-documented work is
fundamental to trace the results of the PAH analysis along the way. This is of
extra importance to minimize the risk of clean masses going to landfill. (Less)
