(2021) PSYK11 20211Department of Psychology
- Abstract
- The aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between social
identity and personal attitude towards climate-friendly behaviour and the climate crisis. More specifically, the aim was to investigate whether strong identification with seven different social identities and ascribed group attitude correlates with personal attitude. Two-hundred and sixty-four persons (N=264) participated in the study through a digital survey. A correlation analysis was conducted between personal attitude and the product of group identification and ascribed group attitude. People are expected to hold a positive attitude towards an issue if they both ascribe the attitude towards the group as positive and identify themselves strongly with the group.... A correlation analysis was conducted between personal attitude and the product of group identification and ascribed group attitude. People are expected to hold a positive attitude towards an issue if they both ascribe the attitude towards the group as positive and identify themselves strongly with the group. Identification with close friends showed the strongest and clearest result, with a significant positive correlation between the product and personal attitude. For the other identities, although varied, the result was less clear and with lower significance. The result was then discussed in connection to previous research combined with a discussion about identity and climate change in broader terms. The authors propose further research in the area of identity in particular and psychology in general, to generate new knowledge that can be useful in attaining the Paris agreement’s 1,5 °C goal.
