Abstract
The following bachelor’s thesis has been aimed to contribute to the understanding of the phenomenon incels. Over the past decade an increasing number of socially and romantically rejected men have exchanged their experiences, values and the injustices of their existence online - identifying themselves as incels. Through mutual encouragement the participants develop a deep hatred of society in general and women in particular. In some extreme instances, the hatred grows into a desire to execute revenge by committing serious violent crimes. This study has been focused on three unique individuals who all have been associated with the incel network, who all have committed serious violent crimes and who all have published different kinds of... This study has been focused on three unique individuals who all have been associated with the incel network, who all have committed serious violent crimes and who all have published different kinds of material online in which they outline their experiences, values and motivations. Through a qualitative thematic analysis the three individuals’ material has been used to develop the understanding of which norms can be identified and how these norms influence the individuals’ descriptions of their existence. The results indicate that the most fundamental norms are that men should establish romantic and intimate relationships with women and that men should be sexually active. The experience of not being able to achieve these norms creates an internal struggle, which in turn is detrimental to the individuals’ self-esteem. This internal struggle, combined with a perception of hegemonic masculinity as based upon authority and power over women, legitimizes violence as a method through which the individuals can uphold a perception of themselves as superior.
