This study contributes insights into the anchoring process of social innovation within the context of food waste in the German agri-food sector. The focus lies on intermediary actors and their role in the anchoring phase. The case of social innovation in the food waste context is exemplified by conducting an explanatory case study and analyzing the findings by utilizing framework analysis. It becomes apparent that network, technological and institutional anchoring are of relevance. Many activities conducted by intermediaries are transversal and contribute to more than one type of anchoring. The role of intermediaries covers many activities promoting the respective type of anchoring. Especially, building connections and strengthening the niche is a pertinent activity undertaken by intermediaries. When classifying the identified intermediaries, it stands out that niche intermediaries, systemic intermediaries and process intermediaries are important during the anchoring phase and enhance the dissemination of social innovation.
