Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
The steel industry is accountable for approximately 7–9 % of global GHG emissions. Therefore, the steel industry must contribute to the reductiuon of emissions of GHG. For a long time, the industry has focused on minor and frequent incremental reductions of CO2 emissions by implementing energy efficiency measures. However, these types of measures will not be sufficient to reach the goals agreed upon in the Paris Agreement as emissions of CO2 is inherent to the conventional steelmaking process. In order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement the actors in the steel industry have to research and implement new technology into the production. To achieve this, decision makers need to incentivize green steel making. This thesis aims to... (More)

This thesis aims to examine and compare the strategies seven steel makers have set up to reach the goals stated in the NDC's of the country where their headquarters are located, based on the information disclosed in their answers to CDP’s questionnaire. The thesis will examine whether it is plausible that the steel makers can reach the goals which have been set up in the NDC:s. The results of the examination of the steel makers CDP-answers are that the level of ambition varies between the examined steel makers. Some countries and steel makers have no policies in place to incentivize the industry to reduce emissions. In contrast, the most ambitious steel makers have set up a pathway to reach net zero emissions by year 2050. However, the steel makers have yet to come very far in the implementation of new technology and time set out to fulfill the goals of the Paris Agreement is running out. To achieve net zero emissions many of the more ambitious steelmakers have been focusing their R & D efforts on H-DRI. If H-DRI technology is to be carbon neutral, the energy production also needs to be carbon neutral. Thus, the decision makers must make substantial investments in zero emissions energy production to aid the steel industry in lowering their emissions. (Less)
