Architecture in the Anthropocene

Imagine your daily surroundings. Imagine your route to work, the busride, the sidewalk, the buildings, the parks, the beaches, the countryside with the agricultural fields. Now take a minute to think about how much of what you see would exist without human intervention? How much of the landscape is modified in some way to suit the needs of the humans? In this mindset we started to investigate the implications of living in a world where artificiality has become the main condition of earth. Ultimately our search lead us to the following question:

How can artificial and natural systems integrate and interact to a higher extent in a symbiotic relationship through architecture?

Imagine your daily surroundings. Imagine your route to work, the busride, the sidewalk, the buildings, the parks, the beaches, the countryside with the agricultural fields. Now take a minute to think about how much of what you see would exist without human intervention? How much of the landscape is modified in some way to suit the needs of the humans? In this mindset we started to investigate the implications of living in a world where artificiality has become the main condition of earth. Ultimately our search lead us to the following question:

How can artificial and natural systems integrate and interact to a higher extent in a symbiotic relationship through architecture?

The thesis consists of three parts: the theoretical context, territorial analysis and architectural proposal. The theoretical context creates a way to think about architecture in light of the anthropocene, the territorial analysis visualizes the systems and agents in a territory, and the architectural investigation shows one example of how architecture could be integrated into the territory based on the previous two parts. Together they form a mindset, methodology and an example of our ideas through architecture.
Creating architecture based on planetary systems poses a greater challenge than an architecture created based on human systems. We use a pragmatic approach to give every system the space it needs to work as efficiently as it can. In the physical intersection of the systems our aim is to let the agents intermingle and form a relationship to each other. (Less)
