- Abstract
- Sweden, often listed as one of the world’s most gender equal countries, has one of the most gender segregated labour markets in the world, as well as one of the largest gender differences in regard to the number of days with parental leave. This paper investigates whether there is an interaction between occupational groups’ gender composition and the effect of average days with parental leave on the average wage. The research is conducted with Swedish national data, on occupational group level. This study uses Pearson correlation and a multiple interaction model to investigate its two hypotheses, which are derived from four theories: human capital theory, theory of statistical discrimination, signalling theory and the value discrimination... This paper investigates whether there is an interaction between occupational groups’ gender composition and the effect of average days with parental leave on the average wage. The research is conducted with Swedish national data, on occupational group level. This study uses Pearson correlation and a multiple interaction model to investigate its two hypotheses, which are derived from four theories: human capital theory, theory of statistical discrimination, signalling theory and the value discrimination theory.
The first hypothesis is that the effect of days with parental leave on the wage is more negative in occupational groups with a higher proportion of men. The second hypothesis is that this negative effect in male dominated occupational groups, is even more negative for men than women. Evidence is found for the first hypothesis when the analysis is conducted on men, but not when conducted on women - most likely because the effect is too small. The second hypothesis is concluded as supported since the investigated relationship is more negative for men than women. (Less)
