Abstract
On July 1st, 2019, the license of the hospital social worker was legislated in Sweden. The aim of this study was to examine the significance of the license for the oncology social worker, using the sociological terminology concepts: role, position and function. The method chosen for this study was qualitative semi structured interviews with eight oncology social workers, working in larger hospital settings in three larger regions in Sweden. Two experts, a head counselor at Skånes Universitetssjukhus and a professional strategist within the Union for Professionals, have also been interviewed. In analysing my result, I have applied professional theory and the concept of Andrew Abbott; jurisdiction, to illustrate the strategies the profession uses in the professionalisation process to strengthen their profession and advance positions in the pursuit of status, recognition and legitimacy. The study found that the license has resulted only in a symbolic meaning without any major significant change or impact of the role, position and function of these oncology social workers. The respondents illustrate shortcomings in the implementation of the license in relation to salaries, recruitment and specialisation. However, the result show that, in general, the respondents are positive to get licensed, it also contributes to increased legal certainty for the patient. The respondents expect the education to result in more competent hospital social workers and contribute to more science of social work in healthcare. There is a belief and expectation that the license will result in change and have a greater impact in the future. (Less)
