- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to try to understand what sort of impact Swedish rap-music and rap-artists have on youth behavior and identity from the Swedish suburbs Seved and Rosengård. Also, whether it influences subcultural youth groups. The hip hop-culture in Sweden has in recent years had lots of media coverage since the artists have been involved in gang activity and a lot of them have been convicted and prosecuted for heavy crimes. Also the fact the music they produce glorifies a lot of bad things like violence, drugs, and weapons. Qualitative interviews with teenage kids were used to collect the data that was needed for this study. Theories such as Cohen's theory about youth delinquency, social identity theory and Goffman's front- and backstage theory were used to analyze the collected data. A youth interested in rap-music and the hip hop-culture from the suburbs tended to show signs of abnormal and deviant behavior. Reasons for this were not only the hip hop-culture but it plays a big role in the life of a suburban youth. Subcultural youth groups/gangs do also have an impact on a youth’s identity. Today's youths use their common interest for rap music and hip hop-culture to express themselves in these subcultural groups. This also derives from the fact that the rap-artists are also involved in gang related operations. (Less)
