(2021) In Examensarbeten i geologi vid Lunds universitet GEOL01 20211Department of Geology
- Abstract (Swedish)
Geoparker... (More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- Geology is a socially important subject that can be communicated through geotourism. Geotourism is a type of nature tourism with a focus on geology, which creates added values for the natural and cultural heritage. In a geopark, geotourism is used as a tool to convey knowledge about Earth's history and the important relationship between geodiversity and biodiversity. Geological and geophysical processes generate geosystem services that ecosystems rely on. Our geological heritage can be protected and managed via geoconservation in the form of a geopark. A geopark is an area that highlights the geological heritage by offering geological attractions (geosites), but simultaneously also consider other local values, including culture, nature,... (More)

Geoparks can operate on national or international levels. In Sweden, a geopark is required to obtain the status of a Swedish Geopark by SGU before applicating for the UNESCO Global Geopark status. Gotland offers a unique geological heritage that has contributed knowledge on evolution and climate change across, as well as created unique geological conditions for animals, plants and humans. This essay presents a list and a map of potential geological destinations, together with an overall study of how national and international criteria are achieved. In the near future, a feasibility study may be launched to further structure and finance the work towards a UNESCO Global Geopark. (Less)
