Abstract (Swedish)
This essay will discuss three craniums from the neolithic and bronze age which each has an interpreted hole from a trepanation. The purpose of this text is to study whether these three craniums truly are trephined and if characteristics such as cut marks, linear fractures, signs of scraping or healing are visible. The aim is also to find which diagnostic characteristics have been used in earlier research when investigating trauma and trepanation.
The craniums for this analysis are from Skåne more specifically Gillhög, Abbekås and Vä and all of them were accessible in Lund. The method used in this paper is a USB microscope to see the smallest of details on the cranium. In order to diagnose trepanations two characteristics have been... (More)

The craniums for this analysis are from Skåne more specifically Gillhög, Abbekås and Vä and all of them were accessible in Lund. The method used in this paper is a USB microscope to see the smallest of details on the cranium. In order to diagnose trepanations two characteristics have been identified, signs of scraping and cutting. To diagnose trauma, signs of linear fractures, SFT or BFT and lack of cut marks have been established.
Through this investigation of these craniums, some remarkable points have been discovered. Indications of healing have been seen at all three craniums. The cranium from Abbekås showed a possible cut mark and the one from Gillhög had immense similarities with trauma called sharp force trauma. (Less)
