Abstract
We were interested in gender as a construction at out-of-home cares working with adolescents on behalf of the social services. We wanted to investigate how gender is presented in out-of-homes care based on their own description of efforts for mixed-sex and same-sex adolescents. We have used the websites of 15 out-of-home cares and their permits issued by Health and Care Inspection Authority (IVO) distributed on the basis of mixed-sex and same-sex. With this we have studied the making of the gender at out-of-home cares and how it may affect the efforts at an individual level and whether the permits from IVO agree with the description on the out-of-home cares´websites. With the out-of-home cares websites and IVO´s permits as a basis we have... (More)

With the out-of-home cares websites and IVO´s permits as a basis we have made a text analysis to see if the descriptions are consistent with each other or if they are any differences and, if so, what those differences are.

The results show that IVO´s permits in general are scarcely written but with some exception of the mixed-sex homes. Our conclusion is that a distintion is made between girls and boys both on the part of out-of-home cares and on the part of IVOs due to preconceived norms as to what kind of problems respectively gender has and how these problems should be adressed. We can conclued that boys are described normatively as being extroverts with aggression problems in need of structure and boundaries. Girls are seen as boys opposite, introvert with self harm and in need of understanding their own feelings and also in need of warmth and consideration.Furthermore we found flaws in the safty net for the HBTQ-adolescents which can be assumed to be due to a normative way of thinking when it comes to gender and also due to lack of knowledge.
We have used keywords such as out-of-home care adolescents, single-sex vs mixe-sex, gender differences and gender identity. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
