- Abstract
- The purpose of the study has been to investigate social workers' experience of working with and supporting women who have been exposed to domestic violence by men during covid-19. We were also interested in how the social workers reasoned about how covid-19 affected this group. We chose a thematic analysis as the data processing method. For the theoretical framework we used the concepts: discretion, communication, coercive isomorphism and sluggish organizations. The results of the study show that the social workers have ensured that the support of the abused women has functioned during the pandemic. The biggest change is described as the shift towards a digital working strategy that has made it possible to hold meetings even when physically unable. Social workers express that virtual conversations have been experienced as challenging and difficult in terms of creating alliances and trust, for example. In addition, they feel that they have received support to deal with the organizational changes that have taken place during covid-19. Their discretion also seems to have been more extended related to the situation during this time. The social workers have had different experiences regarding increased exposure to violence for women. The women are described as having been affected by the pandemic through, for example, isolation in the home with their abuser, which has led to difficulties in seeking help and increased risk of being exposed to violence. However, a few social workers believe that the pandemic has not been a major factor based on women’s statements. Due to the pandemic, women have been missing out on joint activities at women’s shelters that are considered important for their quality of life and self-image. (Less)
