- In the Lutheran tradition, of which the Church of Sweden is part, the spoken and written word often gets an automatic priority over the experience and perception of artistic expression. As a result, the discourse on the role of aesthetics in liturgical formation has come second to the ongoing discussion about the linguistic and semantic meaning of texts. This thesis wants to contribute to a renewed aesthetic-theological reflection and recognition of an aesthetic longing in man that is not fully taken seriously by the Church today.

(More) - In the Lutheran tradition, of which the Church of Sweden is part, the spoken and written word often gets an automatic priority over the experience and perception of artistic expression. As a result, the discourse on the role of aesthetics in liturgical formation has come second to the ongoing discussion about the linguistic and semantic meaning of texts. This thesis wants to contribute to a renewed aesthetic-theological reflection and recognition of an aesthetic longing in man that is not fully taken seriously by the Church today.
However, in the Lutheran tradition itself, there are sources that the Church of Sweden seldom is in contact with. One such source is the early Romantic movement in Germany around 1800 which gave birth to numerous thoughts about art as a direct link to God as well as what role art played in the shaping of a better society. In this environment, theologist Friedrich Schleiermacher and the poet Novalis, who both formulated ideas about the relationship of aesthetics to the divine and about religion as an obvious part of a good and moral society, operated. The purpose of the thesis is to discover, through the analysis of two central texts by these authors, opportunities for how the Church today can meet people's aesthetic longing.
The analysis and the subsequent discussion are based on the assumption that there is a relationship between aesthetics and ethics, which have consequences if broken. Thus, the questions put to the texts concern the relationship between aesthetics and religion as well as the relationship between aesthetics and ethics. The study primarily shows that an artistic perspective of liturgical formation could have positive consequences also for the rest of the pastoral work in the parish community. Concurrently, it becomes evident that, in order to avoid misuse of artistic expression for possibly negative purposes an upgrade of the aesthetic dimension must always occur in relation to an ethical reflection.
