- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to examine how the school counselor's role has looked and developed over the past decade and their possibility to help students with their mental health. The study is based on six reports from different years during the last decade and the laws that regulate the work of school counselors, all six reports were made by the same union. The years of which these reports were published are 2013,2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2021. - The aim of this study is to examine how the school counselor's role has looked and developed over the past decade and their possibility to help students with their mental health. The study is based on six reports from different years during the last decade and the laws that regulate the work of school counselors, all six reports were made by the same union. The Reports were analyzed according to two theoretical perspectives in M. Lipsky's theories of room for maneuver and Street-level bureaucrats and Max Weber's organizational theory of the bureaucratic school and previous research. The results showed the importance of school counselors and how essential it is to actually have one physically present in school. The results also showed us that school counselor is overloaded with work, even though the laws are too vaguely described, which in turn leads to students' access to school counselors being negatively affected. Furthermore, the opportunity for collaboration with other actors, preventive work and the opportunity to work with students' mental health are negatively affected. (Less)
