Abstract
This project has explored how virtual reality can be used as a tool for communicating architecture and what advantages and limitations virtual reality provides over other mediums of representation. In the project I’ve compared the difference between portraying 3-dimensional space through a 3-dimensional medium, such as virtual reality, and a 2-dimensional medium, such as a computer screen or a printed sheet of paper, and how the new set of tools that virtual reality enables can aid in understanding and communicating architectural design.

This project has explored how virtual reality can be used as a tool for communicating architecture and what advantages and limitations virtual reality provides over other mediums of representation. In the project I’ve compared the difference between portraying 3-dimensional space through a 3-dimensional medium, such as virtual reality, and a 2-dimensional medium, such as a computer screen or a printed sheet of paper, and how the new set of tools that virtual reality enables can aid in understanding and communicating architectural design.

Using a head-mounted display(HMD) I’ve investigated the advantages that virtual reality provides, initially through a series of concept models and finally through a case study focusing on the concept of body ownership illusion, the illusion of possessing a body that isn’t your own.

The case study has explored the potential of experiencing architectural design from the perspective of a child using the body ownership illusion through tests and interviews with other people that has compared understanding and communicating a design proposal of a kindergarten in 2D to a child’s perspective of the same kindergarten in virtual reality.

The tests and interviews concluded that the participants were able to better understand and evaluate the kindergarten in virtual reality and that the child’s perspective helped in understanding how it was adapted to fit a child’s needs. (Less)
