The study examines the Polish state's problematizations and statements during the period 2020 to 2022 concerning Poland's new abortion law. The study is a discourse analysis based on Bacchi's "What is the problem represented to be?" to analyze the problematization the state mediates. Furthermore, the study uses feminist constructivism as the theoretical framework. The Polish state's problematization concerning abortions is based on their view of abortion being a type of murder. The state believes that abortion is an inhumane act because the fetus's life should be respected. Moreover, abortion does not respect the views of the Polish Catholic Church. Furthermore, the state describes pregnant women as significant and underlines that the women's lives matter. The fetus is described as important and defined as a child. In addition, the state believes that all lives are important, and that is why Poland banned abortion on fetus abnormalities. Both pregnant women and fetuses benefit from the Polish government's statements. However, the protesters and women with unwanted pregnancies do not benefit from the state's representation. The government describes the protesters as criminals and a threat connected to covid-19. The pro-choice movement is also described as a threat to the Polish nation. (Less)
