- Abstract
- We live in what some call the “post-truth era”. Post-truth was appointed word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries in 2016. This thesis is a study on what significance different types of engagement on social media has on teenagers' knowledge about Swedish politics. This is called “media literacy” and is very important for online freedom and hence also in real life. The question is answered by categorising a smaller group of teenagers... (More)
- We live in what some call the “post-truth era”. Post-truth was appointed word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries in 2016. This thesis is a study on what significance different types of engagement on social media has on teenagers' knowledge about Swedish politics. This is important to understand because a great deal of the public debate concerning national politics nowadays takes place online. In addition, to be able to engage and exercise one’s rightful freedom to participate in a democratic society you have to to some extent understand the information you get online. This is called “media literacy” and is very important for online freedom and hence also in real life. The question is answered by categorising a smaller group of teenagers into three different groups, passive media consumers, stand-by citizens and passive media consumers. These three groups have been identified and categorised through interviews. To understand what significance engagement on social media has on teenager’s knowledge about Swedish politics I thereafter analyse the three different categories’ knowledge as a result of their engagement on social media. My conclusion is that different types of engagement on social media has a big impact on teenager’s kowledge about Swedish politics and that the knowledge is to quite a large extent affected by the level of media literacy.
