- Abstract
- This essay analyzes the different representations of migrants that were expressed by
the Swedish government between November 2015 and January 2019 using the theory of coloniality. The analysis was conducted through analyzing speeches, statements and press releases from the politicians of the Swedish government in the time period November 2014- January 2019 using critical discourse analysis, as outlined by van... It was also investigated whether these representations changed over time and between contexts. The analysis was conducted through analyzing speeches, statements and press releases from the politicians of the Swedish government in the time period November 2014- January 2019 using critical discourse analysis, as outlined by van Leeuwen. The theory of coloniality was used to deconstruct and critically examine the different representations of the migrants, and their potential origins in racist and colonialist ideas and images. The results of the study show that
the politicians expressed several different representations of migrants, that to different degrees can be connected to racist and colonialist images of the non-European “other”. However, examples of representations that challenges these images were also identified in the discourse. (Less)
