- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how participation in a Fountain House’s music-unit was experienced from a recovery-perspective. We contextualized our empirical material with the help of Self-Determination Theory and Neo-Institutional Theory. The research questions are: (1) How do participants experience the possibility for recovery with support of the music unit? and (2) How does the Fountain House as an institution function in relation to the music-unit based on our informants perspectives? The seven informants were interviewed with a semi-structured method, and the material was analyzed with thematic analysis. We concluded that those participants that performed outside the Fountain House, with the help of the music-unit, more... (More)

We concluded that those participants that performed outside the Fountain House, with the help of the music-unit, more often experienced the music-unit as recovery-supportive. These informants also showed greater needs-satisfaction from a self-determination perspective. To experience the music-unit as recovery-supportive, it is important to feel that you receive enough support with regards to your music participation. We also concluded that there are concurring logics within the music-unit that affect the informant's experiences; one that promotes recovery and another that promotes music performances of good quality. These concurring logics exist to increase the organization's legitimacy. For future research, we observed a need for a deeper understanding as to how institutional conditions impact on possibilities for recovery. (Less)
