Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate how social workers, working with financial aid, creates participation for children and if their work has been affected by the legal enforcement of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its children rights perspective. We used a qualitative method when interviewing in order to examine and find an answer to our purpose and question at issue. The results was analyzed based on the theory of discretion and Street-level bureaucrats. The purpose of this study was to investigate how social workers, working with financial aid, creates participation for children and if their work has been affected by the legal enforcement of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and its children rights perspective. We used a qualitative method when interviewing in order to examine and find an answer to our purpose and question at issue. The results was analyzed based on the theory of discretion and Street-level bureaucrats. The result shows that the majority of social workers does not experience any difference since the Convention on the Rights of the Child became legislated into Swedish law. Every respondent further expressed that they felt uncertain about when and how much they should communicate with children, although they agreed that communicating with the children is essential in order to ensure the wellbeing of the children. The results showed that all respondents agreed that it is important to communicate with the children to ensure the children's well-being, but that the results show an uncertainty about involving children through conversation. The respondents expressed a desire for the Convention on the Rights of the Child to be clarified in order to be enable the use of it in their practical work. The conclusion of the study is that more time and resources are required for social workers to be able to involve children in conversations about financial aid. (Less)
