Touching Architecture - Towards an Architectural Typology for the Sense of Touch
(2022) AAHM10 20221Department of Architecture and Built Environment
- Abstract
- This research aimed to explore the sense of touch within the discipline of architecture. While haptic stimulation has been studied within architectural theory, the sense of touch remains underrepresented within the practical side of the discipline. To increase the accessibility of the knowledge necessary for representation within architectural practice, there was a need for further study. This has been addressed through a methodology comprised of multidisciplinary research, a series of three case studies, and personal exploration in material experimentation. With the obtained knowledge, a framework for an architectural typology for the sense of touch was presented. The primary component of the typology is a toolkit that outlines the... (More)

This has been addressed through a methodology comprised of multidisciplinary research, a series of three case studies, and personal exploration in material experimentation. With the obtained knowledge, a framework for an architectural typology for the sense of touch was presented. The primary component of the typology is a toolkit that outlines the strategies that can be implemented within architectural practice to engage haptic stimulation. The proposal should not be read as definitive, rather, it should be interpreted as a frame of reference for those who wish to stimulate the sense of touch within their work. (Less)
