Abstract
In Sweden there has been an increase in neuropsychiatric disabilities over the last few years. This has led to many discussions, both in science and politics as well as amongst regular people. But the most valid and knowledgeable source of information about life with a neuropsychiatric disability is the people living with it themselves. The aim of this paper is to research individuals' experiences living with neuropsychiatric disabilities and how that has influenced their lives. This was done through a qualitative method, document analysis of two documentaries that originally aired on Swedish television, Bokstavsbarnen (Letter-children)
and Diagnosresan (Journey of diagnoses). The analysis was done through a thematic analysis where the collected data was leading the analysis forward. Three main areas that were considered important to cover in the study were society and school, social relations, and mental health. During the work with the analysis two theories were used: norms, normality and normalization as well as Goffman’s concept of stigma. The results found in the study showed that all the people had similar experiences. It also found that normality, society’s expectations, and the stigmatization that can follow a disability had a large impact on their lives. Lastly the study concludes that it is important to consider and give individuals with neuropsychiatric disabilities the appropriate accommodations to prevent for example school difficulties and declining mental health.
