Based on seven qualitative, semi-structured interviews with adhd-diagnosed parents, our aim is to deepen the knowledge regarding the positive and negative impacts in parenthood, concerning their own experiences. The purpose of this study is also to get an insight into how society's expectations of parents affect the adhd-diagnosed parents view upon themselves.
The theoretical framework used was stigma, coping and parenting styles with an analysis conducted by thematic analysis. The conclusion of the study is that adhd-diagnosed parents experience both opportunities and obstacles in their parenthood due to the diagnosis. The most significant positive effect is the increased understanding and affection a shared diagnosis with a child can cause. Negative effects are related to difficulties obtaining structure, tiredness and low energy as well as experiencing ignorance from the environment. Other findings are that parents tend to self-stigmatize themselves when they are reflected in others, and that self acceptance and openness about the diagnosis increases understanding and humility from the surroundings.
