Abstract
What upsets and outrages today’s neighbors in a quiet suburban area in Norway? This study aims to explore the social order of neighbor-Facebook groups through a thematic analysis of three Facebook-groups and 83 posts related to deviance. By looking at posts concerning everything from adolescents smoking marihuana to stolen potted plants this study finds that deviance, even today, draws people together in a collective feeling of solidarity. Kai Erikson ́s (1966) description of a community’s moral framework is used to explain what forms of deviance is accepted as a natural part of the community, and what falls outside the “normal” forms of deviance. The results indicate that it is in some cases not always about the deviant act itself, but... (More)

Kai Erikson ́s (1966) description of a community’s moral framework is used to explain what forms of deviance is accepted as a natural part of the community, and what falls outside the “normal” forms of deviance. The results indicate that it is in some cases not always about the deviant act itself, but who commits it. Members of the communities are more likely to be forgiven, and the police is more likely to be contacted when the act is believed to be carried out by an outsider. Aspects of digital vigilance and social control is also explored, and one of the main findings here is that with the increase in private surveillance cameras combined with posts about deviance in the neighbor-groups, people might experience a perceived increase in deviance.
