- Abstract
- The ongoing climate change, caused by anthropogenic emissions, are making humans adapt to a new status quo, but focus should also be on mitigating climate change. One possible solution for this is to use the natures’ ability to sequestrate carbon from the atmosphere. To do this, it is necessary to gain knowledge about the current situation regarding land cover and the capacity to store in different types of land cover. The aim of this study is to investigate the change in land cover in Helsingborg municipality between the year 2000 and 2017 and its potential to store carbon. The methods used are remote sensing by ortophotographs in combination with modelling of potential carbon storage.

The results show that there has been a development regarding land cover. The land cover for 2017 showed an increase in hard surfaces and a decrease in agricultural land, but also a slight increase in vegetation, compared to 2000. The land cover has an ability to potentially store a total of 5.06 Mt carbon. The agricultural land in the municipality has an ability to store 3,3 Mt carbon, high vegetation 1,1 Mt, low vegetation 0,4 Mt and hard surfaces 0,2 Mt. Scenarios were created to test out how different types of land cover development could potentially influence the carbon storage in the land cover. The scenarios show that implementing more areas with high vegetation could increase the potential carbon storage up to 0.68 Mt, and implementing green roofs could increase the potential carbon storage up to 0.13 Mt.
(Less)
