Abstract
The aim of this study was to research how ISIS-returnees were portrayed by Swedish
media in order to understand the impact media’s portrayal of ISIS-returnees may have on
media consumers' attitudes towards these individuals. This was done by a qualitative
content analysis of 26 articles from two different Swedish news sites, named SVT Nyheter

and “ISIS-terrorists” in the articles. The result also demonstrated how the

news sites described ISIS-returnees as a threat to Sweden and its population. This could,
for example, be seen in the way the individuals were described to still be a part of ISIS
and as criminals. By portraying these individuals as deviant and as a threat, the media
consumers reading the articles could be believed to be affected and adopt a similar
mindset. This could result in an increased fear amongst readers and a stronger support
for “special politics”. (Less)
