Abstract
This thesis examines feminist performances in the context of disobedience. Using data gathered through textual analysis from journals, articles, media, and social media, this thesis describes and analyses the aesthetics in feminist performances by three different feminist movements and how disruption is achieved. The theoretical framework builds upon the first phase of social drama, the breach, and related concepts, followed by performance theory. The main findings of this thesis reveal that each performance disrupted rules of morality, laws, and norms. By examining how female bodies are represented, it is a clear distinction in how each performance integrated feminist ideology into movement gestures, symbols, and music. Consequently, the... (More)

Popular Abstract
Protesting gender inequality, sexual violence, discrimination, and oppression is just one of current issues of feminist movements. Over the recent years, feminist activism has gained worldwide attention. In order to attract attention, feminist movements often rely upon songs and slogans to criticize the inequality they experience.
In this study, I analyze the Chilian feminist collective LasTesis, Russian collective Pussy Riot, who are known for their resistance to Putin’s regime, and Daughters of Reykjavík, an Icelandic hip hop movement known for pushing gender boundaries. At the centre of their feminist activism presented is how the body speaks (to) the political, social, and cultural issues. I have analyzed social media accounts and... (More)
Protesting gender inequality, sexual violence, discrimination, and oppression is just one of current issues of feminist movements.
I have analyzed social media accounts and articles from interviews to frame how feminist movements try to reach audiences and strengthen their cause. How do the feminist movements use the female bodies to attract attention? What becomes clear is that feminist movements rely upon the performance, using clothes, music, and other creative ways to attract others to join in. They most often criticize the ones who hold power and turn their attention to emerging social injustice issues. The feminist performances focus on space, or a setting known for gendered restrictions. By violating a sacred altar, live broadcast, and police station, they all strive to deliver their message: reclaiming public space.
The findings presented in this thesis are significant in how social relations are presented through performance. Especially this expands our knowledge about feminist movements, the importance of mobilization, and how they use music and clothes as symbols. By focusing on popular culture, music can be used to attract more participants and address concerns, as it unites the feminist movements and attracts more followers. (Less)
