Abstract
School compliance is affected by several interactions and circumstances according to young people. Previous research has mostly limited its focus on the underlying reasons of school refusal and school truancy; researchers have primarily gathered information and data from observations, literature studies or by interviewing professionals. In this study we have chosen to focus on school attendance instead of school absence because most of the previous research focuses on absence. We aim to shed light on young people's perceptions of the interactions and circumstances that promote school attendance. In this study we have chosen to focus on school attendance instead of school absence because most of the previous research focuses on absence. We aim to shed light on young people's perceptions of the interactions and circumstances that promote school attendance. Using a qualitative research method we have interviewed eight young people between the ages of 18–25 who have attended entirely or partly the primary school in Sweden because we believe that user perspective and influence is an important factor in solving social problems. Our findings that were analyzed using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system theory show how young people have a good self-insight into what interactions and circumstances affect school attendance.Youths describe family and its norms, values and the importance the family gives to school as an important protective circumstances and interactions when it comes to attendance. Furthermore, our interviewees have named the teacher's high level of competence and ability in motivating their students to attend school and study by offering them the support and help they need. The quality of the lessons and the class environment has also been lifted as important points. Kind and friendly classmates have also been considered important, named as a relevant element when it comes to creating entertaining social gatherings and encouragement when it comes to study. The results of this study could maybe be used by researchers for further studies on school attendance. (Less)
