Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze how young criminals are described and portrayed in Swedish news reporting and to identify discourses. We chose to analyze 19 different articles from four different Swedish newspapers. These newspapers were two morning papers and two evening papers. The criterias for our range of articles were that they needed to contain a description of crime and that the person who committed or was the suspect, would be described as a young person. By using a critical discourse analysis and Fairclough's three dimensional model we were able to analyze and code our material. We found that young criminals are either described as a victim or a bearer of responsibility. These findings led us to our two discourses “the young... (More)

By using a critical discourse analysis and Fairclough's three dimensional model we were able to analyze and code our material. We found that young criminals are either described as a victim or a bearer of responsibility. These findings led us to our two discourses “the young criminal as a bearer of responsibility” and “the young criminal as a victim”. These two different discourses contained opposite descriptions of the young criminal. The young criminal was either described as a helpless victim or portrayed as naive and tough. We also found that some people in certain contexts are seen as having more knowledge about the situation or the young person and their information is therefore more credible. We did find descriptions of the young criminal as neither a victim or a bearer of responsibility. We choose to analyze these findings in the study to show that not all young criminals belong in one of these two discourses. These findings constitute a minority of our findings. (Less)
