Abstract (Swedish)
Both football and football fandom is historically male dominated. Female fans in football are
a minority in all aspects of the sport and its surroundings. This study aims to analyze how
female football fans cope in the heavily male dominated space of the football arena crowd.
More specifically the aim is to analyze how female resistance to male hegemony is
formulated within said area. The study is based on the interviews of six female fans of the
Swedish football club Malmö FF. The collected material is analyzed from concepts of Pierre
Bourdieu such as field, symbolic capital and symbolic revolution. The study identifies two

Bourdieu such as field, symbolic capital and symbolic revolution. The study identifies two
forms of female resistance that are both connected to one another. The female resistance is
formulated in organization and participation. By organizing, so-called, women only fan
groups, the women can bypass the value of being a man within the other fan organization and
thereby set their own agenda. They also eliminate the role, often given to female fans, as a
male appendage, also devaluing the male gender. By participation the female fans appear to
aim at creating a more inclusive atmosphere within the stadium by not participating in chants
and choreographies that are perceived as excluding towards genders, races or sexualitys. By
doing this, they devalue the male gender by leaving the male perspective that often is
predominant in the chants within the crowd. (Less)
