- Abstract
- I have examined a text known as the litany. The term litany is, within the scope of my essay, the collective name for the text which is also known by other names such as Psalm 700:1, intercessory prayer 8 and Litany - shorter form in the liturgical context of the Church of Sweden.
I have read the litany with a starting point in Gustavo Gutiérrez's liberation theology and Gustaf Wingren's Scandinavian creation theology. After analyzing the litany from the perspectives of these theologians, I have conducted a textual analysis to examine the litany and its possible correlation to three relational perspectives: 1) God, 2) Man, and 3) Creation. The way I have investigated these relational perspectives is based on what is called liturgical theology, that is, the theology that arises through participation in liturgy and the theology that this in turn manifests.
I have also included a perspective based on Karin Oljelund's theory that the linguistic difference between the different handbooks can be understood as a difference in how humans are viewed as passive receivers or active co-creators in creation alongside God and how this can affects the the outcome of my analysis of the litany.
Based on the analysis that arose in connection with this, it can be understood that the liturgical expression found in the litany can influence how man's place and role in creation can in turn be understood.
In my closing chapters I propose that it is possible to discern that this is something that can affect the view of worship in a Christian context - this as a direct result of the illumination of the relationships within creation and between its various parts. At the same time, it is something that can be understood based on the assumption that liturgy creates theology. I also offer suggestions for further research based on my experience throughout the writing of my essay. This culminates in a view that there is a lack of research regarding the function of the litany for the congregation that prays the litany during lent and based on liberation theology and Scandinavian creation theology.
