Abstract
Dumpen is an organization whose purpose is to stop potential child sex offenders by having adults behind the activity pretend to be a child in order to expose these people who are seeking contact with these fictional children on their website. Dumper's methods have been noticed and criticized in media forums, which has generated a debate publicly. Therefore, the study aims to examine how Dumpen justifies its work and how Dumpen is portrayed by the media, particularly in newspaper articles. This is done by analyzing the different actors' discourses. Consequently, this study adopts a social constructivist approach in which the media is seen as a participatory social actor in the establishment and reproduction of the study's focus area,... (More)

Consequently, this study adopts a social constructivist approach in which the media is seen as a participatory social actor in the establishment and reproduction of the study's focus area, Dumpen's website, and focus group, the potential perpetrators. The material consists of eight newspaper articles and Dumpen's website and has been analyzed through the Foucauldian discourse analysis. Through this, three discursive themes emerged: how a potential perpetrator is portrayed, who is portrayed as the victim, and the perception of legal security. The concepts of stigma and power also become prominent in our research area. The results of our discourse analysis are presented in our analysis and compared with previous research on the subject and our theoretical framework. In the result of our study, it appears that the portrayal of Dumpen's approach by Dumpen itself differs from the media. Discourses have a significant role through power, truths, and untruths and it is noticed that Dumpen and the media focus on different arguments to strengthen their respective positions. (Less)
