The aim of this study was to examine how professionals working with substance abuse in outpatient treatment describe their experience of working with relapse cases. The method chosen was qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven different professionals working with substance abuse in outpatient treatment at different organizations. When analyzing the results of our study we used Aaron Antonovskis' salutogenic theory which we supplemented with Marc Zimmermans empowerment theory and Ervin Goffmans' concept of stigma related to shame. The study found that alliance between the professional and the client was important in working with relapse, the alliance contributed to consistency in treatment despite the feeling of guilt and shame within the client. It was essential that the professional work with the client's motivation and strengthened the client's self-confidence to prevent relapse. Furthermore, helping the client to find something meaningful in their life was central to the treatment. Finding something meaningful showed that clients were more constructive in facing difficulties instead of escaping their feelings. Lastly, working together with the client to find strategies were significant for relapse prevention according to the professionals. This study has attempted to describe the process of relapsing and highlight the experiences of professionals working with substance abuse in outpatient treatment. (Less)
