- Abstract
- The primary aim of this study has been to examine to what extent people with addiction experience feelings of loss and sorrow as they go from being active in their abuse, to being an addict in recovery. This is all done through the theoretical framework of the exit theory, formulated by Helen Rose Fuchs Ebaugh (1988). Furthermore, the study examines how big of an impact the ex-role ‘active addict’ has on the new role of ‘recovering addict’. The results show that 5 out of 6 participants did experience emotions such as sadness, loneliness, a sense of loss, grief, and bereavement related to their recovery process. However, all participants also stated they experienced relief, happiness, and freedom. Additionally, the results show that the sober community is crucial in sustaining the participants' recovery. Lastly, the emotions, thoughts, and feelings related to the recovery process are complex. Still, we argue that one essential part of dealing with addiction is addressing feelings of loss and sorrow.
