This study aims to continue the research on these parties from a different perspective, by selecting one case of a green formerly challenger party and observing its metamorphosis from challenger to established. The goal is to create an understanding on if government positions have an effect on the status of “challenger” or if the phrase is merely used to categorise a party as “new”. This has been done by analysing documents from three party conferences, eight years between each other, from seven years before, one year after and nine years after its government debut. The results suggest that there is a strong case to be made that a position in government does cause a definitive change in the party’s political agenda, and that the status of challenger party and mainstream party is not just a categorical description, but an actual fact of political life.
