Abstract
This is a thesis about rural consciousness, a theory that rural people see themselves as different than city people, deprived of resources and not represented in politics. Through a qualitative comparative method, a case study based on interviews of locals is conducted on Gotland, Sweden, with inspiration from Katherine J. The results from the Swedish case study are then compared to Cramer’s previous results, to answer the research question: “What does rural consciousness look like in Sweden, and how is it different from USA?”. The results show that the people on Gotland have a rural consciousness, they see themselves as different from city people and believe that their challenges are... (More)
This is a thesis about rural consciousness, a theory that rural people see themselves as different than city people, deprived of resources and not represented in politics. Through a qualitative comparative method, a case study based on interviews of locals is conducted on Gotland, Sweden, with inspiration from Katherine J. Cramer’s previous research in Wisconsin, USA from 2016. The results from the Swedish case study are then compared to Cramer’s previous results, to answer the research question: “What does rural consciousness look like in Sweden, and how is it different from USA?”. The results show that the people on Gotland have a rural consciousness, they see themselves as different from city people and believe that their challenges are not being dealt with by national leaders. The comparative analysis show that there are many similarities between the results from both countries. For the most part, the same attitudes towards city people and tourists are being presented, as well as common challenges with economic deprivation and service decline. This study shows that rural consciousness could be an important instrument to understand rural-urban divides in Sweden and other countries. (Less)
