Abstract (Swedish)
Abstract
Within the psychodynamic field, there has long been a theoretical awareness that termination in psychotherapy often evokes strong emotional reactions in patients. Increased symptoms at termination have been understood as a natural and transient reaction to the impending separation. Studies have shown symptom exacerbation to be more common in psychodynamic therapy and to be transient with recovery after treatment completion. If this symptom exacerbation can be better understood, it opens up an opportunity to develop the psychodynamic method. Participants from the POSE project who received panic-focused psychodynamic therapy and experienced Termination Setback (TS) (Nilsson et al., 2021) (N=15) as well as a control group (N=15) were selected... Participants from the POSE project who received panic-focused psychodynamic therapy and experienced Termination Setback (TS) (Nilsson et al., 2021) (N=15) as well as a control group (N=15) were selected for the study. Filmed sessions from the week before reported TS were rated using the Comparative Psychotherapy Process Scale (CPPS), the Common Factors Rating Scale (CF-scale), and an item constructed focusing on termination and separation. t-tests were conducted to examine differences between the groups. The results showed that the TS group received significantly fewer interventions focusing on feelings about separation and significantly fewer relationship-enhancing and supportive psychotherapy-common interventions. No difference could be found between the groups regarding psychodynamic interventions. The conclusion is therefore drawn that psychodynamic interventions can be complemented with relationship-enhancing and supportive interventions as well as interventions focusing on feelings about separation to reduce the risk of TS.
