- Abstract
- This study investigates preschool staff's experiences assessing the need for a report of concern, their knowledge of legislation and signs of child maltreatment, and their collaboration with social services. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight preschool staff from various municipalities in southern Sweden. The findings were analyzed using Michael Lipsky's street-level bureaucracy theory, focusing on how staff discretion serves as a framework for their actions. - This study investigates preschool staff's experiences assessing the need for a report of concern, their knowledge of legislation and signs of child maltreatment, and their collaboration with social services. By examining these aspects, the study aims to identify obstacles and opportunities for improving collaboration between preschools and social services. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight preschool staff from various municipalities in southern Sweden. The findings were analyzed using Michael Lipsky's street-level bureaucracy theory, focusing on how staff discretion serves as a framework for their actions. The results reveal mixed experiences with social services. The respondents express frustration over the lack of feedback on investigation outcomes, which hampers their ability to support the child effectively. They seek more information on whether suspicions were justified and the nature of maltreatment identified to work with the child appropriately. The preschool staff expresses that they have insufficient knowledge of social services work and require clear guidelines to balance the child's best interests with those of the guardians. There is also a desire for more knowledge about signs of child maltreatment, emphasizing the need for a concrete understanding of these signs and when it is appropriate to make a report. (Less)
