Although long waiting lists are not uncommon in Sweden it is still imperative to delve into how staff are affected by the waiting lists which they have no control over. Qualitative methodology was brought to bear involving ten semi-structured interviews with different hospital professionals, these include hospital counselors, psychiatrists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, nurses, and speech therapists. The interviews were analyzed with reflexive thematic analysis and looked at through the lens of ethical stress and Job Demands – Resource Theory. The data gathered showed two themes regarding the research question. These are “The value of information” and “Benefits and frustrations” which indicate that the hospital staff are thinking about the waiting list and how they should manage it and develop new routines to lessen its impact on the patients. Conclusions show that the staff are affected by ethical stress in various aspects regarding the waiting lists for their patients. These aspects include the stress of having to wait for coworkers to be able to have the whole team available to work with a patient and if and how they should help patients that need assistance with third-party organizations that manage their sick leave.
