- Abstract
- Mitigation of climate change as the main goal of the Paris Agreement aims to keep the global mean temperature at 1.5 Celsius. As of now daily global temperature are surpassing this threshold which indicates the urgency to reenact more work in limiting green house gas emissions and at the same time optimize sequestration of carbon dioxide already in the atmosphere. One key instrument to sequester carbon dioxide is the use forests. Numerous studies have been conducted on optimal harvest scenarios for providing climate benefits and the conclusions of these are contrasting. This study aims to further the analysis and to expand the knowledge of optimal harvest methods as a mean of sequester carbon dioxide in order to provide climate benefits.... (More)

This study aims to further the analysis and to expand the knowledge of optimal harvest methods as a mean of sequester carbon dioxide in order to provide climate benefits. The study is composed of an analysis of two different forestry practices and how they compare in their carbon sequestration on a temporal scale. The two forestry practices compared are clear cutting and continuous cover forestry. This study shows that continuous cover forestry provides more climate benefits on a shorter time scale while clear cutting shows a larger net carbon sequestration in a longer timeframe. The results of the analysis also show that clear cutting may be a more efficient strategy later in the future, but this relies on that harvested wood material is being used in a way that does not release the carbon that has been sequestrated. The overall conclusions are that continuous cover forestry provides greater climate benefits on a short timescale and that clear cutting provides marginal benefits on a longer timescale. (Less)

(Less)
