- This study aims to address criticism regarding the knowledge gap in Swedish research considering women's involvement in gangs and their treatment when seeking to exit a gang-involved lifestyle. The research seeks to contribute insights beneficial for women and grassroots bureaucrats involved in the existing process. The study qualitatively investigates current practices and discussions related to aspects that should be evaluated when working with women. - This study aims to address criticism regarding the knowledge gap in Swedish research considering women's involvement in gangs and their treatment when seeking to exit a gang-involved lifestyle. The research seeks to contribute insights beneficial for women and grassroots bureaucrats involved in the existing process. The study qualitatively investigates current practices and discussions related to aspects that should be evaluated when working with women. The core questions of the study include exploring the support interventions and municipalities preparedness for women in gang-related environments to transition into society post-exit, understanding women´s perceived support needs, and addressing professionals work alignment with the key measures needed for exiting criminal gangs as a woman.
Employing a qualitative cross-sectional design through semi-structured interviews, the study can capture the insights of the work from both females that have been leaving a criminal gang, and the operative professionals working for the social services and other fields that are included in the process.
The finding highlights the importance of coordination among authorities, the implementation of research-based approaches, and policy considerations to effectively address the needs of women seeking to exit criminal gangs or environments. Challenges include bureaucratic discretion, institutional factors, and the complexities of women’s situations, which underscore the necessity of tailored support and policy reform, with a focus on the female perspective, in consideration to facilitate successful exits from criminal lifestyles within gang environments.
