- Abstract
- The Swedish election 2022 demonstrated a significant ideological divide between men and women in Genreation Z, a unique phenomenon for this generation. This contradicts the Cultural Backlash-theory, which empathizes young people’s inclination to support left-leaning parties. This study examines the rightward shift amongst men in Generation Z through an ideal type analysis, constructed from characteristics found among populist radical right (PRR) voters, as outlined by the theory. These include economic marginalization, lower educational status, political distrust, socially conservative values and generational aspects. By comparing young men with young women, the study determines whether these criteria impact political orientation... (More)

This study examines the rightward shift amongst men in Generation Z through an ideal type analysis, constructed from characteristics found among populist radical right (PRR) voters, as outlined by the theory. These include economic marginalization, lower educational status, political distrust, socially conservative values and generational aspects. By comparing young men with young women, the study determines whether these criteria impact political orientation differently and evaluates the theory’s ability to explain this rightward shift amongst young men. Comparisons with other generations are also applied in order to determine whether the phenomenon is a societal trend that is unique for Gen Z men. The findings support the theory's premise that post-materialist values can provoke a reaction leading to support for PRR-parties. The most prominent societal trend that explains the shift to the right among young men were gender conservative values. While the "losers of globalization" criterion is only partially met, the theory's overall explanatory power remains strong in explaining the ideological polarization between the genders. (Less)
