This research focuses on the dynamics of power, trust, and responsibility between social workers and their clients and is viewed through a qualitative lens by interviews with four social workers. The findings in this study reveal that documentation acts as perhaps the most significant tool of power in the context of residential care homes, affecting the relationship and working alliance between social workers and clients. The results also show that social workers are very much aware of the differences in power between themselves and the clients and highlight the importance of being responsible in using said power in the building of
relationships. The study also explores the challenge of achieving a positive working alliance through the dynamic of professional boundaries about an empathic approach and personal emotions. Trust was identified as crucial in the forming of working alliances and communication built on honesty was shown to be an essential component in the building of a trusting relationship. (Less)
