Abstract
This study investigated the frequency of moral distress among staff in the Swedish organization SiS. Moral distress arises in situations where people, in their professional role, experience that they cannot act in accordance with what they deem to be morally correct because of institutional limits. Earlier studies among healthcare staff have shown that moral distress have negative consequences for both the individual and the organization. However, there has been no research in moral distress among SiS-staff, who works with compulsory care. The purpose of this study was to investigate moral distress among SiS-staff, how moral distress correlates and how moral distress can be predicted by coping, psychological flexibility, stress, and... The purpose of this study was to investigate moral distress among SiS-staff, how moral distress correlates and how moral distress can be predicted by coping, psychological flexibility, stress, and empathy. The result showed that there were no significant differences between the SiS-staff and American healthcare staff concerning moral distress, and that the SiS-staff perceive organizational obstacles as especially morally distressing. The results showed significant relations between the overall score and frequency of moral distress and stress, and significant associations between experienced impact of moral distress and empathy, stress, and problem focused coping strategies. The results also show that stress was a significant predictor för the staff’s total score of moral distress. Empathy, stress, and problem focused coping were also found to be significant predictors of experienced moral distress. Stress was the only significant predictor for the frequency of moral distress. In summary, the results partially differ from previous research, which means that further research is needed to gain further in-depth knowledge about moral distress amongst SiS-staff. (Less)
Abstract (Swedish)
(More)
(Less)
