Abstract
Historically, since its inception in the late 1930s, the album cover has been an important platform for visual creativity that has enabled creators such as artists, illustrators, photographers and designers to experiment with different styles and concepts.
The democratization of art through the album cover aims to analyze how this form of artistic expression has and continues to contribute as a medium to democratize art and promote cultural accessibility by expanding access, visibility and participation in the art world to a wider audience beyond the institutions.
This study analyzes how the vinyl covers, as a global platform through its massproduction, allows not only very known artists of our time but also the “less” so to reach a wider audience, at the same time that they provided consumers with a sensorial, global and unique aesthetic experience.
Through a comprehensive literature review and case study analysis of previous theories by art historians, philosophers and sociology, the aim of the study in terms of democratization of art are explored. The examination of the historical and cultural aspects of the vinyl covers will also be applied. History shows how their appearance has been influenced by its era. The analysis reflects the strategies used by both the artist behind the cover and the musician behind the music to make use on eachother's creativity on reaching a wider audience. The results of this study demonstrate that the vinyl cover has played a crucial role in the democratization of art to provide an accessible platform for artists and encourage the appreciation of visual art in a musical context. This analysis contributes to the understanding of how the physical forms of art can continue to be relevant in the digital era and how the vinyl cover continues to be a powerful tool to democratize art becoming an important global historical and cultural archive promoting diversity.
