Abstract
With the climate change the frequency of disasters are increasing all over the world. Hospital is an important organization which has significant role and responsibility during and after disaster. Proper preparation from beforehand is necessary to handle disaster related mass emergency. The objective of this scoping review is to offer a thorough overview of disaster preparedness among hospitals in developing and developed countries, to find out research gaps or limitations or areas of inadequate studies in reviewed articles and providing an idea about the methods used to measure hospital disaster preparedness in reviewed articles. In this study Arksey and O'Malley’s scoping review five steps methodological framework was followed and total 56 articles were reviewed which were retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus search, from year 2013 to 2023. Descriptive and thematic analysis were done. In thematic analysis results indicated that, developed countries are better prepared compared to developing countries in hospital disaster preparedness, although developed countries also have rooms for improvement. The areas which need improvement in both developed and developing countries were training, education, simulation exercise, capacity building, resource allocation, skilled personnel, strategic plan, communication, supply chain, infrastructure, vulnerability assessment, policy development, building knowledge and resiliency, collaboration and cooperation, periodic checkup for further improvement etc. Results indicate that, there is room for small to medium scale of improvement for developed countries and developing countries need medium to large scale of improvement. Review result from different methods which were used to measure hospital disaster preparedness in 56 articles revealed that, the common disaster preparedness parameters were almost similar in all articles, which were evaluated by the researchers by using different methods. Remarkable number of research gaps or areas of inadequate studies were detected in reviewed articles, which showed the direction of further research in future while trying to avoid the retrieved limitations from the reviewed articles. As an institution hospital plays crucial role during and after disaster. Proper preparation from beforehand is necessary to handle disaster related mass emergency. This scoping review offers a thorough overview of disaster preparedness among hospitals in developing and developed countries, which was identified as a lack in previously available articles. Research gaps or limitations or areas of inadequate studies are discovered and an overview about the methods used to measure hospital disaster preparedness in reviewed articles are presented in this paper as well.

Total 56 articles were reviewed and those articles were retrieved from Google Scholar, PubMed and Scopus search, from year 2013 to 2023. In this study... (More)

In this study Arksey and O'Malley’s scoping review five steps methodological framework was followed. For the purpose of answering research questions descriptive and thematic analysis were performed. Thematic analysis results indicated that, developed countries are better prepared in hospital disaster preparedness compared to developing countries, although developed countries also have rooms for improvement. Following sectors are needed to be improved in both developed and developing countries: training, education, simulation exercise, capacity building, resource allocation, skilled personnel, strategic plan, communication, supply chain, infrastructure, vulnerability assessment, policy development, building knowledge and resiliency, collaboration and cooperation, periodic checkup for further improvement etc. Results indicate that, there is room for small to medium scale of improvement for developed countries and developing countries need medium to large scale of improvement.

To summarize the methods which were used to measure hospital disaster preparedness in 56 articles revealed that, the common disaster preparedness parameters were almost similar in all articles and those parameters were evaluated by the researchers by using different methods. Remarkable number of research gaps or limitations or areas of inadequate studies were detected in reviewed articles, which showed the direction of further research in future. It is also crucial to avoid the limiting factors retrieved from the reviewed articles in future research. However, this scoping review has revealed the practical situation of hospital disaster preparedness in developing and developed countries. The findings from this study may help the respective authority to take further steps for the improvement of hospital disaster preparedness keeping in mind the areas which need urgent attention.
